A ‘home-from-home’ for young people suffering mental health problems has been created at a hospital in Middlesbrough with the help of Tarkett flooring.

West Lane Hospital, run by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), is investing £13.8million in a redevelopment project that will care for young people from across the North East.

As part of the work, the former low secure Westwood Unit is being refurbished to create a new 14 bed assessment and treatment facility for the current Newberry Unit to relocate to.

When complete this will provide a welcoming environment and make the experience of being in hospital more comfortable.

Tarkett’s Tapiflex Excellence 65 in Natural Oak was specified for use throughout the unit.

Paul Foxton, Head of Capital Projects and Development at TEWV, said: “We’ve worked closely with patients to develop a facility that will have a homely a feel as possible.

“The Tarkett flooring chosen for the unit helps us move away from the traditional institutional look but without compromising on any of the hard-wearing qualities we needed.”

Tapiflex Excellence 65 vinyl flooring is made with a transparent 0.65mm wear layer. This makes it resistant to indentation, abrasion and tearing.

It also cleans easily thanks to its added TopClean XP PUR surface treatment and its high-density acoustic backing significantly reduces noise with a performance rating of -19dB – something Paul saw as essential.

“To speed up recovery times we need patients to feel as calm and relaxed as possible, a noisy floor acts as a disturbance so an acoustic floor that reduces noise was a must.

“Added to the fact it’s easy to clean and could be used with underfloor heating, it ticks all the boxes,” said Paul.

The new unit provides patients with a lot more room, new furniture and colourful artwork on the walls helps complete the homely feel.

Available in more than 100 colours and 13 designs, Tarkett’s Excellence 65 is a popular choice for architects and specifiers in health and aged care sectors.

Steve Urwin, Tarkett UK Marketing Manager, said: “Tarkett has an extensive research and development team that works hard to produce products that satisfy the needs of everyone – from specifiers and architects through to cleaners and everyday users.

“The feedback we’ve had from TEWV has been excellent and shows that this hard work is paying off.

“The redevelopment sounds like a project that will be of huge benefit to patients and I’m pleased Tarkett has been able to play a small part in it.”
