‘Eastern promise’ with Gerflor

The council-run Eastern Leisure Centre in Cardiff had more than 250,000 users last year, but was in urgent need of modernisation. New features have been an open reception area, improved changing rooms, gym and soft play facilities; a new dance studio and spin room.

Gerflor

Councillor Peter Bradbury, cabinet member for community development, Co-operatives and social enterprise, said at the time, “The modernisation of Eastern Leisure Centre has enjoyed strong support from both the community and elected councillors so this multimillion-pound investment will be welcome news.”

The project would be a perfect ‘fit’ for international flooring and interiors specialist Gerflor. They would provide their high-end Taralay Impression Control safety flooring in ‘Infinity Greige’ and ‘Esterel Chocolate’ colours, together with their uber-performing Taraflex® sports flooring in ‘Maple’ and ‘Lagoon’ to the appointed installers Cardiff-based Puma Floors Ltd.

Matthew Graves, Commercial Director, Puma Floors Ltd, commented, “We originally provided a quotation at the tender stage when the main contractor was appointed and progressed our sales activity to secure the work by providing a new quotation, which subsequently meant we were appointed”.

With Taralay Impression Control and Taraflex® Sport M Performance from Gerflor being included in the original tender document the project was clearly aiming for high quality products throughout the 1600m2 element of the re-fit.

Gerflor won the 2016 CFJ/CFA product of the year category with their Taralay Impression Control range.

This safety flooring collection is perfect for both refurbishments and new builds. A multi-purpose floorcovering available in 2m sheet format with a Group T wear rating, it’s ideal for a host of heavy traffic environments where slip resistance is a must.

Heradesign® offers multi-functional versatility on a grand scale

City of Glasgow College is the largest and most diverse tertiary education establishment in Scotland. Its Riverside campus opened its doors in 2015 aiming to lead the global maritime college community. City campus opened in 2016 creating twin site, flagship Super College and powerhouse of technical and professional skills.

HeradesignCity campus, which is currently on the shortlist for the RIAS and RIBA Awards 2017, houses a purpose built 3000m² x 10m high Construction Workshop that’s divided into smaller bespoke teaching areas. Heradesign® from Knauf AMF is installed throughout to control reverberation and enhance the industrial design aesthetic.

Controlling reverberation was the main driver for choosing Heradesign® for the multi-functional workshop. The individual teaching areas are separated by 4m high open-top walls. Loud machinery is often in use in one space whilst elsewhere at the same time tutorials are taking place. Heradesign® provides Class A sound absorption which helps control the ambient sound level, reduce reverberation and increase speech intelligibility, ensuring lessons can take place without disruption.

Heradesign® was recommended to Reiach and Hall Architects Director Angus Wilson as a cost-effective ceiling solution that satisfied the design and acoustic brief. “The acoustic performance of Heradesign® prevents the large industrial workshop from acting like an echo chamber. This was the main reason for switching products. I liked how the textured surface of Heradesign® worked well with the raw materials that are used elsewhere in the space.” Angus Wilson has specified Heradesign® since for a number of education and refurbishment projects.

Heradesign® is manufactured from sustainably sourced wood-wool and has a naturally woven surface. For the Construction Workshop, Heradesign® was specified in a natural colour, but its surface can be matched to a virtually endless range of custom colours including those using RAL,  NCS or StoColor.

Roskel Contracts Ltd carried out the ceiling installation in the workshop. Director Richard Spinelli explained how the versatility of Heradesign® ensured the work went smoothly. “Heradesign® was fixed directly to the concrete soffit using wooden battens. We left spaces between the panels to allow a metal framing grid to be inserted which the services attached to. The metal grid and Heradesign® dovetailed together to form a neat, clean finish.

Heradesign® is ideal for educational buildings because it offers long-lasting durability, has high impact resistance and provides excellent fire safety (Class 1A).

If you’re working on an educational project, the team at Knauf AMF can provide technical support and specialist product knowledge to help you achieve your desired result. Contact info@knaufamf.co.uk or visit www.knaufamf.com for more information.

Red Elm is on the menu at Itsu

The American Red Elm tables can now be found in ITSU outlets at Victoria, Camden, Heathrow T5 and Bristol. And following the success of the new concept booth seating there are plans to re-fit more restaurants across the UK later in the year.

AMERICAN RED CEDAR

ITSU as a company pride themselves on providing “beautiful” high quality food, so it was imperative for them to find “beautiful” high quality materials to reflect their company ethos. American Red Elm is known for its attractive appearance, boasting a smooth texture and distinctive visible grain so it was the perfect choice.  However, American Red Elm was not only chosen for its aesthetic qualities but also its sustainability credentials as well as its hard-wearing attributes.

James Latham

James Latham often recommended American Red Elm for furniture projects such as this due to its excellent shock resistance and flexible bending properties, enabling joiners and furniture makers to produce superior craftsmanship.

To add a modern twist to the traditional material, one of ITSU’s specifications for the booth area incorporates USB chargers inside the wood so that customers can re-charge their phone with ease whilst enjoying a delicious, nutritious meal with friends.

James LathamMitch Jackson, Timber Sales at Latham’s Leeds depot said

“Our customer was delighted with the overall finish which American Red Elm created, these new concept booths really do stand out and give the ITSU restaurants the wow factor.

“American Red Elm is great for furniture projects such as these as it is a light and porous species of wood. Plus, as well as being fantastic at absorbing noise, which is useful in a busy restaurant such as ITSU, it is also resistant to moisture. And with its elegant and distinctive finish showing visible grains, American Red Elm is simple to work with and stain, making it an ideal material for commercial dining tables such as these.”

Glazed doors, the clear choice

Summer is upon us, bringing with it increased light levels to building interiors.  This natural borrowed light is invaluable, illuminating dark spaces and reducing the need for artificial light.  With this in mind its worth giving closer consideration to the use of glazed interior doors that can transform both living and communal space.

Vicaima glazed door

Vicaima doors are of course renown for innovative designs in an extensive range of finishes and performance characteristics to suit a multitude of applications. It’s little wonder then that this range is complimented by a comprehensive array of glazed options to match the needs of today’s social housing market.

Of course light is just one of the many factors to consider when selecting glazed interior doors for social housing. Safety must of course be of paramount concern, whether directly from the use of safety glass or less apparent but no less important where fire doors are concerned.

interior door

Vicaima is a leader in fire door technology with one of the widest ranges of FD30 and FD60 doors and doorsets (i.e. designed to resist a fire for 30 and 60 minutes respectively) in the UK. The company’s particular appeal is that it makes fire doors which are also beautifully designed. At Vicaima all fire doors are supplied factory glazed to ensure risks are removed.

interior glazed door

Glazing is a particular concern for fire doors as, unless correctly installed, it can create a weak area in the door. Historically, 6mm thick wired glass was the only option, however modern glass technology has led to the development of much more aesthetically pleasing glazed fire doors.

Another important consideration in the selection of glazed doors is of course the requirements for clear visibility as stipulated under Part M of the Building regulations. Again here many Vicaima glazed door designs address this issue, providing complete mobility solutions.

Selecting the right glazed door is a simple process with help and assistance from the Vicaima Interior Door selector.  This handy guide, available both in print and digital format via the Vicaima website, enables quick and easy choice of door design.

A wide variety of glazing models can be offered, so it’s just a matter of deciding which finish is required and then paring it with the chosen aperture pattern.  Of course non-standard or bespoke designs can also be provided in many instances, so that specific design requirements can be accommodated.

And in addition to flush doors and door sets, Vicaima have recently introduced a new Classic K range.  This modern twist on the conventional panelled design also includes glazed options, making it ideal where traditional and contemporary styling needs to meld.

Yegin Industries Designs New Floor to Score Sales and Employee Satisfaction

  • Sports court style flooring provides Yegin Industries with the ideal space to showcase products.
  • Flowsport chosen for the project thanks to its durability and design potential.
  • The interior design elements of Yegin Industries’ new facility were a key priority.

Flowcrete has created a floor that will help Yegin Industries bounce, dribble, volley and dunk its way to success!

The sports ball manufacturer Yegin Industries specified a selection of high performance resin flooring solutions from Flowcrete in order to install a creative and unique floor finish throughout its brand new office in the Long Giang Industrial Park, which is situated in Tien Giang Province, Vietnam.

The office was part of a large-scale, multifaceted facility that included an administrative centre, production factory and chemical warehouse as well as utilities areas, a canteen, car park, swimming pool and green spaces.

YEGIN INDUSTRIES DESIGNS NEW FLOOR TO SCORE SALES AND EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION

The plan for the new site was to incorporate the theme of sports into the very fabric of the building itself. The dual purpose of this design scheme was to provide employees with a fun and enjoyable atmosphere while also creating the ideal environment to showcase its products to prospective clients.

This interior design ethos was exemplified in the office’s showroom – which came with a built-in basketball court! Across the building staff areas were also designed to emulate sports courts and gyms to give employees the space and motivation to get active.

The appearance and functionality of the floor in the basketball court style showroom was a priority, as the floor would need to impress clients and provide an engaging space for Yegin Industries to demonstrate its products.

YEGIN INDUSTRIES DESIGNS NEW FLOOR TO SCORE SALES AND EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION

To achieve this appearance as well as ensure that the floor would withstand people running, jumping and playing across the surface, Flowcrete supplied a flooring build-up that was formulated to be robust and able to maintain its visuals for an extended period of time.

1,750 m2 of Isocrete K-Screed was first applied in a 50mm layer so that the substrate would deliver a high-strength platform for the resin coating. Isocrete K-Screed is a semi-dry cementitious screed that incorporates a proprietary additive to produce an early drying, high strength screed.

To showcase the company’s “work hard, play hard” attitude, the designer specified 100 m2 of FlowSport with Deckshield UV Linemarker. This was applied in the showroom and gym room, as it would provide the bright colours and clear patterns necessary to create sports-court style finishes. The resilience of FlowSport’s polyurethane technology was perfect for the gym room, where employees would be exercising during the working hours.

FlowSport is a composite surface that creates a synthetic and flexible sports floor. This system delivers a resilient and uniform surface with a cushioned effect for added spring as well as the easy to clean advantage of a completely seamless surface.

1,650 m2 of the antimicrobial system Flowfresh MF in a light grey colour was also chosen for hygiene critical areas of the building, such as the office, canteen and dormitory areas. This system was specified thanks to its understated aesthetics and superior cleanliness properties. Floors in the Flowfresh range incorporate the Polygiene® antimicrobial additive, which inhibits the growth of bacteria on the floor surface by up to 99.9%.

Altro’s first adeshive-free flooring for low slip risk areas is tough time-saving solution at Warrington Hospital

New Altro CantataTM, the company’s first adhesive-free flooring for areas with a low slip risk, is already demonstrating its capabilities at Warrington Hospital, providing a tough time and cost-saving solution in a busy non-clinical corridor.

Altro safety flooring

Lee Bushell, the hospital’s acting head of capital projects, said: “The service corridor is an area that gets an enormous amount of traffic. It’s in constant use during the day.

“After many years of this treatment, the existing vinyl flooring was really showing the strain. It looked tired, scruffy and we needed to find a hard-wearing, affordable, long-term solution that could be laid with minimal disruption in this busy area.

“We have a very good relationship with Altro and their flooring is proving very successful elsewhere in the hospital, so we asked them to have a look at the corridor and give us some guidance.

“They suggested we use their new Altro Cantata flooring because it could be laid straight down onto the existing flooring, without adhesive, which would mean a fast installation.

New Altro Cantata is a decorative, adhesive-free flooring that creates maximum impact with minimum downtime.

Using Altro’s award-winning adhesive-free installation method, it can be welded and walked on the same day, and at the end of its life removed easily, allowing it to be reused or recycled.

It is ideal for busy public spaces where disruption needs to be minimal, such as hospitals, with the durability needed for medium-to-high-traffic areas. Plus, there are no associated adhesive odours.

Altro Cantata’s 16 soft-look shades, which range from subtle naturals to beautifully vivid, allows you to create just the right colour scheme or tone.

Bushell said: “I was sceptical that Altro Cantata would be able to meet our needs, but I am very pleased that I have been proved wrong and it has been perfect for us in so many ways.

“There was a very-short window for installation because the corridor is in use until 7pm, but the process went very smoothly and was completed in just one night.

“A flooring that needs adhesive would have taken 3-4 days to fit. Altro Cantata has delivered a massive saving in cost and the corridor was back in full use the next morning.

When speaking of the floor handling foot and wheeled traffic, he added: “It’s standing up to the demands well with no signs of movement, bubbling or rippling, which proves it truly is a long-term solution and not just a temporary fix.

“In terms of aesthetics, the flooring looks superb. There are some great colour choices. We selected a pale ice blue, which perfectly matches the colour scheme of the corridor.

“And ceaning is proving to be a revelation. The black scuffs and wheel marks from the trolleys were always tough to remove on the old flooring. Initially our cleaning team was doubtful they could get the marks off the new flooring, and nervous of using the scrubber and buffer because they thought they might do some damage.

“But we are delighted to report that the flooring comes up like new after every nightly cleaning regime and even the stubborn black wheel marks are gone. Scrubbing machines and buffers are doing a wonderful job, with no damage.

“Sustainability is also an important factor for us. Because Altro Cantata is an adhesive-free flooring, it means that in the future, if we need to make repairs, we can simply cut out a section and replace it without having to re-lay the entire area. And the product is 100% recyclable as well.

“Overall, Altro Cantata is meeting all our needs in terms of cost saving, durability, looks and hygiene.

“This is vital at a time when the NHS is looking to make savings where possible, while also maintaining the highest standards.”

The hospital is now looking to place the product in another non-clinical area where there are similar issues with installation time.

Altro Cantata was installed at Warrington Hospital by Cheshire Contract Flooring. Director, Dave Hunt, said: “The beauty of Altro Cantata is that it can be laid straight down on to the subfloor, or existing flooring, with minimal preparation.

“There is no need to grind the floor, or put down a DPM, or prime, screed or use adhesive. This is a massive time and cost saver, a real fast-track solution.

“Plus there is no need to wait for adhesive to dry and cure, so the flooring can be used and walked on immediately.

“It’s an ideal product for busy areas with heavy traffic where quick installation is paramount.”
