CRL Stone has launched a new comprehensive range of engineered quartz surfaces, created to meet the demands of modern living. Hard wearing and easy to care for, CRL Quartz is ideal for the kitchen and bathroom where durability and flexible design are paramount.

CRL Quartz CRL Quartz is a beautiful engineered quartz stone, which is scratch, heat and stain resistant, which, unlike natural materials such as marble, never needs to be sealed. Requiring minimum maintenance to keep it looking as good as new, the non-porous surface makes cleaning simple, with soap and water or a mild detergent all that is needed.

Offering a versatile design solution appropriate for any setting, CRL Quartz is available in a choice of 32 colours, with a polished finish. In thicknesses of 20mm and 30mm, the surface comes in an extra-large format slab measuring 3.2 x 1.6 metres, allowing for greater consistency in design over large spaces such as kitchen worktops.

Altro Xpresslay brings fast turnaround and cost savings at 27 new build schools

The proven cost and time saving credentials of award-winning Altro LooselayTM technology has lead to Altro XpressLayTM safety flooring being selected for installation in 27 new schools being built in the North East of England.

Galliford Try is building the new schools as part of the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP). Galliford Try has a longstanding Supply Chain Agreement with Altro, so when it came to specifying flooring for the PSBP schools, both companies worked closely together to select a high quality, cost-effective flooring that was also quick to install.flooring

Roy Perry, Galliford Try Contracts Manager, said: “We chose to work with Altro on the PSBP scheme due to the strength of our supply chain relationship and their array of appropriate products for the schools.

“We selected Altro XpressLay because it’s a cost-competitive option that would also save us installation time on all the priority school schemes in this region. In many instances we require a quick turnaround, as Galliford Try is under pressure to deliver the schools within set timescales.

“We have been pleased with the service we have received from Altro and the flooring contractors, which has enabled us to complete the work to the customers’ satisfaction.”

Altro XpressLay is the world’s first ever adhesive-free safety flooring, and features Altro Looselay technology. Altro Looselay technology allows any subfloor moisture to escape. It has been designed to lie flat, without the need to be adhered. Altro Looselay doubled-sided, moisture-tolerant tape is used to secure the flooring in place while you weld. As there is no adhesive you get same-day welding and can walk on the floor straight away. Altro XpressLay can be easily removed post-installation, re-used elsewhere and then recycled at the end of its life.

The range boasts 42 colours, featuring bright and subtle, sparkle-free designs and decorative chipped options to choose from. The Altro XpressLay palette matches with Altro WalkwayTM 20 safety flooring, enabling both ranges to be combined to suit the application.

Altro XpressLay also features Altro Easyclean technology with superior chemical and stain resistance, to ensure it stays looking good for longer.

The flagship school for the PSBP scheme, and one of the first to be built, is the £18.6 million Hessle High School and Sixth Form College in East Yorkshire. Previously Hessle High was split over two sites, with 1,450 students, including 200 students in the sixth form.

The new build, designed by DLA Architecture Ltd in Leeds, has created a combined, fit-for-purpose school that operates from just one site, with new science labs, ICT and teaching areas and sports facilities for up to 1,550 pupils, including 230 students in the sixth form.

Phoenix Flooring Division installed 5,500m2 of Altro XpressLay throughout Hessle High School in four different shades; Waterfall on stairs and corridors; Blizzard in laboratories; Fog in wet areas; and Roof Garden in the stores.

The easy-to-fit capabilities of Altro XpressLay meant big savings in time and a trouble-free installation, as Phoenix Flooring MD Matt Brown explained.

“With Altro XpressLay there is no need to lay a dpm, and it can be fitted without adhesives,” said Matt. “This makes it very cost and time effective, and fitter friendly too. We know that every time we use this flooring we save a lot of time on a project, so for us it’s a great choice all round.

“Prior to fitting at the school, we prepared the substrate with a smoothing compound to create a true, flat surface. We then fitted Altro Looselay double-sided moisture tolerant adhesive tape to all perimeters and areas where the flooring would have joints. This helps the flooring to stay in place.

“Then it was simply a case of cutting the sheets of Altro XpressLay to fit, laying them into position, removing the backing from the adhesive tape, and rolling the flooring back into place. Joints were finally hot welded to finish off.

“We were on site for three months, with eight fitters working at the busiest period. We had excellent support from Altro throughout the entire project, but they always deliver a very high level of back-up.”

Mark Owen, Facilities Manager at Hessle High School is happy that Altro XpressLay is ticking all the right boxes. “We had a mixture of lino and tiles in the old school, which looked very old fashioned and was neither safe underfoot nor easy to maintain. This new flooring looks superb, colourful and modern, and it’s a proven safety flooring that can stand up to the rigours of busy school life.

“There has been no rucking or movement at all. It’s as firm and reliable as any flooring fitted with adhesive. So for a school it’s a great product, because we have the flexibility to repair or reuse the flooring in the future if required.

“Maintaining the flooring is proving easy as well, and it cleans up very nicely. We mop as and when required, and for areas which get the most traffic and dirt we use a walk-behind scrubber regularly. During school holidays we give everything a much more thorough going over with a circular scrubber, which brings the floors back to their very best.”

ROCKFON creates the perfect learning environment

Set in a picturesque village in County Clare, St Joseph’s Secondary School is a new state-of-the art learning facility created as part of an ambitious multi-million Schools Bundle PPP Programme – Bundle 4 Project.

ROCKFON ceiling solutions were installed to help create the ideal conditions for learning and enhance the architect’s contemporary design.ROCKFON

Pat McManamon from BAM Building Ltd, Ireland, was involved in the selection of ROCKFON ceilings for this project “We chose ROCKFON because their ceiling systems met (and exceeded in most cases) the acoustic requirements set out by the Department of Education. Fire safety is paramount in schools and ROCKFON ceiling systems conform to the safest fire classification, Class A1 fire resistance.”

Education buildings need to be functional and pleasant spaces. Major contributors to this are light and sound. ROCKFON Artic satisfies these requirements and was installed in classrooms, offices and circulation spaces. The tile’s smooth, white surface offers optimum light reflection, contributing to a comfortable environment with low glare and reduced eye disturbance. Artic also provides enhanced sound absorption (0.8aw) – ensuring teachers can communicate – enabling students to perform at their best.

ROCKFON
ROCKFON Tropic D concealed edge ceiling tiles were chosen for the special needs unit. ROCKFON Tropic provides Class A sound absorption which helps create an environment that offers optimum speech intelligibility – essential for all children, but particularly those with learning difficulties.

Pat McManamon expands on why ROCKFON Artic and ROCKFON Tropic were the preferred choice: “The tiles have a very white and attractive finish which fits with the school’s minimalist design. The availability of a concealed grid system in the same range and finish was also a deciding factor in selecting ROCKFON for these projects.”

The white, smooth surface of ROCKFON Tropic ceiling tiles offers 85% light reflectance and full light diffusion helping make effective use of available natural light. These excellent lighting conditions help improve the working environment and contribute to a reduction in energy costs.ROCKFON

ROCKFON Koral was fitted in the shower and wet rooms at St Joseph’s as it has a wipeable, micro-textured surface that can cope with increased humidity and the need for regular cleaning with a damp cloth or sponge.

SIG Ireland supplied the ceiling tiles. A leading distributor, SIG can deliver a range of ROCKFON acoustic products from stock via its branches in Ireland and across the UK.

ROCKFON ceiling tiles remain dimensionally stable even at humidity levels of up to 100% relative humidity. This unique performance characteristic enabled the contractor to reduce the original specification of 7-8 different ceiling tiles to just three – saving on installation time and material costs.

Hyland Contracting installed ROCKFON ceilings at the School. Director, Mark Hyland was impressed with the technical support he received from ROCKFON. “Having a representative from ROCKFON here in Ireland made a big difference to the job. He was on site, and offered advice and assistance at every stage, which ensured the ceilings looked perfect. We plan to use ROCKFON for the next three school projects.”

ROCKFON has unrivalled experience in the education sector. With an impressive track record backed by in-house technical support, ROCKFON area managers can provide advice on how to create a school building that satisfies regulations and is an inspiring place to learn.

Neaco balustrade featured at landmark college development

Neaco has supplied an extensive balustrade specification for a landmark development as part of East Riding College’s new Beverley Campus and Environmental Technologies Centre.

Architects Jefferson Sheard worked alongside the College and stakeholders in the development of a concept for a modern facility which acts as the face of the institution and concentrates on the Beverley Minster as an inspirational focal point, sense of place and historic context for students and staff. Neaco’s balustrade with glass infills is featured within an impressive atrium space and multi-functional hub presenting a large, welcoming and open space to visitors whilst affording excellent views of the Minster.

The new Beverley Campus for East Riding College is a future-proofed, cohesive learning environment and community resource for East Riding College and the local community. The BREEAM Excellent building incorporates an Environmental Technology Centre, flexible learning spaces and workplace learning environments for vocational study. Optimal natural ventilation and daylight are present in the design of the teaching and breakout spaces and materials have been used which will provide good life cycle costing and relatively low maintenance.

Much of the ground floor accommodation to the west is “customer facing”, being hair and beauty salons, restaurants, along with the learner services hub. The Environmental Technology Centre offers training and development in “clean” engineering subjects, interfacing with the engineering workshop retained within the development.

neaco handrails and balustrade featured at award-winning scheme

neaco’s contemporary handrails and balustrade have contributed to an award-wining development at the new Barker’s Furniture Store in Northallerton.

Designed by SP&Architects and constructed by Wharton Construction Ltd, the store’s mixture of new build and refurbishment won Best commercial building/scheme in the North & East Yorkshire region at Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards 2016.   neaco’s Quad stanchion was specified with tubular toprails and toughened glass infills to provide a contemporary solution on an internal stairway and mezzanine floor.

Nigel Peacock of SP&Architects said: “We are very pleased with the excellent aesthetic of neaco’s balustrade which contributed significantly to the urban industrial themed interior design. The development has now been forwarded as a finalist in the LABC’s national awards which are taking place in November.”

Jeff Cutting of Wharton Construction said: “The client is over the moon with the result of the redevelopment and neaco’s service was very involved from start to finish. They attended regular on-site meetings to discuss the installation details and dealt with any issues quickly and effectively.”

neaco offers a range of balustrade and balconies available in stainless steel or aluminium powder coated in a choice of solid colour, metallic colour and wood-effect finishes combined with a wide choice of infills, including vertical or horizontal rails, perforated panels, tension wire, toughened glass panels (in-line or offset) and mesh. The company also offers structural and semi-structural glass balustrade. The systems are extremely durable and maintenance-free with modular components assembled using internal fixtures rather than welding or hot works.

Altro sets clinical standard for new medical centre

Altro’s flooring and wall cladding systems are proving their clinical capabilities in a new state-of-the-art primary healthcare facility in Maidstone, Kent, where safety and infection control are paramount.

Redeveloped from an existing building by main contractor Willmott Dixon Interiors, Albion Place Medical Centre combines a local GP practice with services provided by Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership, plus an on-site pharmacy.

The three-storey medical centre – procured by specialist medical facility developer GPIC Ltd – was designed by GDM Architects, whose priorities for the selection of flooring and wall cladding were clear. “Our key drivers for the new medical centre were safety and infection control, so the flooring and wall cladding had to meet very stringent requirements,” says senior architect Ben Jugoo.

“We chose Altro’s range of products because of their suitability for clinical environments in terms of safety and hygiene. They also offer a great range of colours, tones and textures, which gives us the flexibility to create an appealing, modern, design-led environment, while keeping within strict health guidelines.

“Robustness was also a priority – our aim was to create a facility that would stand the test of time, and where the flooring and wall cladding wouldn’t need to be replaced in five years. Low maintenance was another important consideration.”

For the circulation spaces on all three floors of the medical centre, and on the staircase, Ben and his team selected Altro Wood SafetyTM safety flooring in Oak Traditions. “We have specified this product before for a medical facility and it proved very successful,” says Ben.

Altro

Altro Wood Safety creates a homely, comforting and familiar look without compromising on safety. There are 16 wood-look designs, including classic, contemporary classic and on-trend. The product works well with contemporary décor such as metal and glass areas, mood lighting, vibrant colours and monotone themes.

In the consulting rooms throughout the medical centre, GDM Architects chose Altro Zodiac SmoothTM flooring. “This product is a good choice for areas where infection control and high standards of cleaning are important. We chose Nirvana green and Oxygen blue, which complemented the colour scheme.”

Altro Zodiac Smooth provides an adaptable design that works anywhere, and hits the mark on durability. It’s ideal for large areas, from care homes to student accommodation. It comes in a range of 24 colours, chosen to reflect any mood: warm, cool, neutral or vibrant. It’s easy to maintain and can be welded to provide a hygienic surface.

Altro SupremaTM safety flooring was specified for the staff changing area, very much with design in mind. Ben explains: “Here, we wanted to use bold design, while also providing excellent slip resistance. We combined three shades of Altro Suprema- Wolf, Caspian and Platinum.”

Altro Suprema is safety flooring with a designer feel. This stunning, non-sparkle safety flooring gives complete design freedom, with 40 colours including three ‘flake’ designs, to choose from.

Altro WalkwayTM 20 SD (static dissipative) safety flooring, in the shade Fog, was chosen for the computer server room. Altro Walkway 20 is a hugely popular, hard-wearing 2mm safety flooring which provides lifelong slip and abrasion resistance. It comes in a range has 42 colours, and has a SD version to minimize risk of damage to static-sensitive equipment.

To minimise the damage from trolleys and buggies in circulation areas, GDM specified Altro FortisTM corner protection for all external corners in the building.

“Equipment banging into walls can quickly cause scuffs and worse damage, so we wanted to give corners a tough extra layer,” explains Ben. Part of the Altro Fortis system, ready-made Altro Fortis corner protection gives added protection to vulnerable corners. Constructed from a highly durable semi-rigid sheet — which is a dense, impervious material, resistant to bumps — it features a lightly textured surface, which camouflages existing scuffs and prevents further damage.

For the medical centre’s showers and hand basin splashbacks, GDM opted for Altro Whiterock ChameleonTM in Pure Innocence. Altro Whiterock has a grout-free surface, which means a vastly reduced chance of harbouring infection, and makes it easy to clean. The Altro Whiterock and Altro Fortis were installed at the medical centre by Goss Environmental Coatings. Managing director George Goss comments: “The Altro Fortis corner protection was very easy to fit, as they come in ready-cut strips of 1.22m x 75mm x 75mm, which can simply be adhered on to corners with AltroFix adhesive.

“Altro also provides colour matched silicon sealant, so that a seamless, watertight seal can be made around the corner protection / wall junctions, which looks very professional. Many other manufacturers don’t provide colour matched accessories with their products; it’s what sets Altro apart. We installed 45 corner protectors throughout the medical centre.

George Goss continues: “For the showers and hand basins, we thermoformed the Altro Whiterock to fit around corners, the joints welded, and colour matched silicon used again for a seamless finish. We were on site for two weeks with two installers. Altro’s excellent customer service and reliability helped the project to go very smoothly.”

The Altro flooring was installed in the new medical centre by Maurice Blackman Contract Floors and Walls. Contracts Manager Jamie Andrews says: “The Altro Wood Safety was flat laid, but elsewhere in the building we used a coved skirting and took the flooring up the wall by 100mm. This creates a seamless, neat solution at the junction where the floor meets the wall.

“All the Altro flooring is very easy to work with, and for us it was a straightforward project, although the treads and risers on the staircases took a little longer. Overall we installed 920m2 of Altro Wood Safety, 236m2of Altro Zodiac Smooth, 271m2 of Altro Suprema, and 19m2 of Altro Walkway SD. We were on site for about three months with two teams of two installers.”

Matt Horton, Project Surveyorfor main contractor Willmott Dixon Interiors, says: “Both Goss Environmental Coatings and Maurice Blackman carried out the installation of Altro products in a very professional and co-operative manner. They worked well alongside the other trades on site, and finished on schedule. The finished results look very good in terms of finish and over quality. Both Willmott Dixon Interiors and the client are delighted with the outcome.”

The medical centre’s Practice Manager, Sue Smith, comments: “The new practice building is a huge step up for us compared with our old premises. We now have a modern, bright, comfortable environment that’s a pleasure to be in for both staff and patients.

“The flooring and wall cladding really contribute to creating a practice that’s both functional and hygienic, yet visually appealing as well, which is so important for patient and staff comfort. The wood effect flooring, in particular, looks great — and just like real wood —but it’s also very practical and feels safe underfoot.

“The Altro Whiterock wall cladding is also very smart, fresh, clean and professional. Cleaning is easy and we have had no issues with keeping the flooring and walling throughout the practice looking like new. Overall we are thrilled with our new space.”
