With strong sustainable and aesthetic qualities, OrganoWood provides architects, professionals and end users with an environmentally friendly and durable wood protection system that ensures longevity, without using harsh chemicals.eco-friendly wood protection

OrganoWood is a tried and tested ecological alternative to pressure treated finishes, producing products that offer aesthetically pleasing and sustainable results. Featuring three leading products – OrganoWood® 01 Protection, OrganoWood® 02 Repellent and OrganoWood® 03 Cleaner – the system provides a wood protection treatment that protects and aesthetically enhances external timber cladding from the exterior elements.

“Wood is a strong, reliable and attractive material that can be innately damaged using chemicals”, comments Michael Nicholls, Sales Manager at OrganoWood UK. “We are pleased to offer an environmentally friendly wood treatment system that complements and enhances the wood’s natural and sustainable properties, without using substances that are classified as hazardous or harmful.”

eco=friendly wood protection

As wood is not naturally as resistant to water, dirt and stains than other materials, it is important to specify a treatment that will add durability and protect the building from potential ailments, such as rot and fire. OrganoWood® 01 Protection offers timber flame and rot protection that meets European environmental and performance standards, with EN113 and EN 13501-1 certification for fire and rot protection respectively.

Organowood

For external cladding installations, precautions should also be considered to protect the timber from water, fungus and dirt. OrganoWood 02 Repellent is a special treatment that has been developed to provide an extremely water repellent surface that prevents any water, dirt and mould from penetrating the timber.

Organowood

As well as offering a high quality and level of surface protection, OrganoWood treated wood keeps its natural characteristics and gradually ages with an aesthetically pleasing silver-grey hue over time that is desired by many.

For best results, first apply OrganoWood 01 Protector, followed by OrganoWood 02 Repellent. Once dry, protection will last up to five years.

All OrganoWood products are ecologically sustainable according to FSC® (FSC-C120532) and PEFC™ (05-35-168).

eco friendly wood protection

“We are thrilled that OrganoWood is being used by so many different users, for so many different applications,” comments Steve Grimwood, Managing Director at OrganoWood UK. “It’s widespread application and ability to protect exterior wood in all environments is without doubt one of its best features. We hope that users continue to find new uses for the solution.”

The external protection and aesthetic qualities delivered through the OrganoWood range makes it an ideal solution for wooden cladding. OrganoWood® Protection 01 provides an unrivalled natural protection against fire and rot decay with OrgnanoWood® 02 repelling water and rot from taking hold in the material – essential to ensure long lasting building integrity.

OrganoWood is often specified to meet the high performance requirements for wooden decking, promenades and jetties. As well as providing water and rot resistance, OrganoWood® 02 Repellent hardens the wooden surface, making it less likely to split or crack. Through its proprietary technology, which mimics the natural fossilisation process, OrganoWood smoothens the surface, ensuring the decking the safe to walk on barefoot.

Organowood

Providing high quality protection without the use of toxic chemicals or heavy metals, OrganoWood is the ideal solution to use on external wood in environments with close contact to children and animals. Requiring little or no maintenance for up to five years, OrganoWood is favoured by those who work on schools, leisure facilities, agricultural buildings, playgrounds, and in public spaces.

Good children‘s furniture should be of high quality in terms of craftmanship, building materials and surface treatments. The product should be robust and completely free of harmful substances. When selecting the wood finishes for Princess Charlotte’s furniture, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers chose Osmo exactly for these reasons.

Osmo wood treatment

“We are delighted that the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers chose Osmo to finish Princess Charlotte’s gift,” comments Steve Grimwood, Managing Director of Osmo UK. “Osmo prides itself in offerning environmentally and child safe wood finishes that include no toxic chemicals and is water, dirt, saliva and stain resistant. These qualities make it ideal to use on children’s toys and furniture. We hope Princess Charlotte enjoys her table and chairs.”

Designer Steuart Padwick wanted to specify bright colours to help inspire Princess Charlotte’s creativity to draw, paint and play at her table. Especially for this project, Osmo was able to provide custom colour tones to match the designer‘s colourful specification.

All Osmo wood finishes are based on natural oils and waxes. These raw plant materials are purified and refined in complex processes and are harmless in a dry state. The natural colour pigments found in the finishes are also approved for the food industry and free of hazardous heavy metals and contaminants.

Osmo Wood Wax Finish provides a water and dirt-repellent surface, is resistant to saliva and stains. In order to appeal to the Royal Children, Osmo Wood Wax Finish was applied in custom colour tones that were created according to the designer’s specifications.

Knauf’s Regal ranges receives planning assent

Proposing the Regal range of colours – developed by Knauf for its Presto render range – has enabled Cavanna Homes to work closely with South Hams District Council’s planning department to achieve a pleasing external aesthetic at its Origins development, set in the heart of the Devon village of Dartington.

“We’ve worked with Knauf products before and planners in Devon have seen it in use on our developments across the county where it provides the right blend of rural appearance with a modern low maintenance performance,” explains Michael Bennett, Commercial and Technical Director for Cavanna Homes (Devon) Ltd.  “We’re very pleased with the result – the Presto render, whether scratch or roughcast, delivers a very good consistent finish, particularly since we have specified Knauf’s Equaliser silicone paint as the final coat”.

Developed to simplify what can be a difficult design decision, the Regal range is restricted to 16 colours that are most readily accepted by most UK planners. In the case of the Origins development of 63 plots, Cavanna selected Steel Grey, Snow White, Ivory and Camel for the two, three and four bedroom contemporary homes that will feature a variety of designs, complementing their surroundings with a mixture of finishes such as timber cladding, render, stone and natural slate roofs.

Resulting from extensive research and development, Presto offers a scratch render specifically devised for the UK climate and housing stock, where this type of render is a finish traditional to housing in many towns and villages across the UK.

Consisting of a lime-based render with high resistance to cracking, Presto render can be applied to the substrate either by trowel or mixing pump, such as those available from Knauf PFT, and then scratched back with a special trowel the next day to expose the coloured aggregate and to form ashlar lines and details to meet local requirements or other design criteria.

Available in a standard grain size of 1.5mm, the Regal range of colours in Presto render also includes: Vanilla; County Cream; Lemon; Cream; Mushroom White; Sienna Red; Rose; Cool Blue; Pistachio; Stone; Platinum and Silver Blue. Each has been extensively tested to deliver quality and reliability as well as the traditional aesthetic appearance.

Suitable for painting, rolling and spraying, the final Equaliser coat is a silicone resin façade paint that is specially designed for the equalisation (one-off rolling coat) of mineral finishing coats in white and tinted shades, in order to even out any differences in shade of the surface of the render caused by drying, weathering or processing. Highly vapour-permeable and water repellent, it dries to a low-tension finish and is structure preserving. Although highly economical, Equaliser has a premium, mineral appearance and is resistant to algae and fungi.

Finish first with OrganoWood®

With architects turning their attention to timber as a favourite material for cladding, Steve Grimwood, Managing Director of OrganoWood®, the natural wood preservative specialist, explains the necessity for specifying a wood protection that offers more than just an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Timber has always been a popular cladding material in many countries throughout Europe. This is due to timber offering a unique combination of both aesthetic and practical features. As a strong, reliable and attractive material, timber is a sought after choice from architects and end users, for both residential and commercial cladding applications.

OrganoWood

As with any natural material, wood requires treatment to provide sufficient protection to maintain its appearance and structure, and maximise the material’s potential.

The Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA) recommends the use of industrial wood protection processes to enhance the long term performance of timber that lacks adequate natural durability. The association reminds the industry that ‘the sapwood of all species is not durable and needs protection.’

PROTECTION

For architects selecting a finish, it is important to ensure that the product will provide the right level of protection, as well as an aesthetically pleasing end result.

Various manufacturers, including OrganoWood, are offering a new generation of wood protection. A tried and tested ecological alternative to pressure treated finishes, these products are both aesthetically pleasing and sustainable, and offer flame, rot and fungal protection, as well as extreme water and dirt repellence.

Through proprietary technology, which mimics the natural fossilisation process, the timber is modified by the attachment of protective silicon compounds to the wood fibres.

Rot and Flame Protection

Where building regulations require fire performance in accordance with British Standards or Euroclass, the TDCA recommends pre-treatment with a quality assured flame retardant.

OrganoWood

Unlike traditional timber protection systems, which rely on biocides to kill the rot fungi and other timber destructive organisms, this new generation of wood protection uses no substances classified as hazardous or harmful, but only natural minerals and fruit substances. These products are tested to meet all relevant European environmental and performance standards and have received EN113 and EN 13501-1 certification for rot and fire protection respectively.

Dirt and Water Repellent

The TDCA also highly recommends the use of moisture permeable coatings.

As wood is not naturally as resistant to water, dirt and stains than other materials, it is important for architects to specify a treatment that will add durability. For cladding installations, measures should be taken in order to protect the timber from water. Structurally, the wood can be designed to allow the water to drain off easily, but a water repellent treatment will reduce the risk of stagnant moisture marking and absorbing. Without treatment, the wood is prone to decay and is likely to warp out of shape. Fungi and mould are also more likely to develop, so a finish that combines properties to counteract this will further increase the durability.

Environmentally Friendly

In the UK, architects and end users look favourably on environmentally friendly products. To get the best results from a timber finish, it is important to specify a product that is entirely non-toxic – without the use of harmful heavy metals, biocides and solvents. It is important to opt for products that are ecologically sustainable according to FSC® (FSC-C120532) and PEFC™ (05-35-168).

Aesthetically Pleasing

As well as offering a high level of protection, these finishes provide an appearance that is desired by many. The finish gradually ages with an aesthetically pleasing silver-grey hue over time.

OrganoWood

OrganoWood offers architects a range of products that consists of OrganoWood® 01. Protection which offers rot and flame protection, OrganoWood® 02. Repellent to provide a dirt and water repellent surface and OrganoWood® 03. Cleaner, an organic wood cleaner for general and intensive cleaning and maintenance of the wood.
