ROCKWOOL reaches new heights in Manchester’s skyline

ROCKWOOL insulation has been specified and installed on a landmark project in the centre of Manchester, providing two new tower blocks with a façade system that ticks all the boxes: fire prevention, thermal insulation and an aesthetically pleasing external appearance.

The Cambridge Street development includes two and three bedroom apartments, built to alleviate Manchester’s growing population. Originally a vacant brownfield site, the project will provide 282 residential flats in a highly accessible location within Manchester’s City Centre.

Although the location is one of the development’s biggest selling points, it presented a challenge for the construction teams. As well as abiding to the local surroundings, the contractor required an insulation solution that complied with all building regulations, including a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K, and would withstand external elements to ensure a quick and undisruptive installation phase.  The materials also had to conform or exceed the regulation for limited combustibility defined in section B4 of Approved Document B External Fire Spread.

Due to ROCKWOOL RAINSCREEN DUO SLAB® being approved by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) as an acceptable solution for projects above 18 meters, Manchester-based building contractor, Renaker Build specified 13,000m2 of 125mm RAINSCREEN DUO SLAB®.

“As a project manager, I have to make many decisions each day, but specifying RAINSCREEN DUO SLAB® for this project was one of the easiest decisions I had to make,” comments Pete Cregeen of Renaker Build.  “We had a strict technical specification to meet, which RAINSCREEN DUO SLAB® effortlessly achieved. I am most impressed with the company’s streamline route to fire compliance with Approved Document B and fire safe solutions for high rise buildings over 18m. In comparison to other insulation solutions, there was no alternative.”

As a fibre based product, RAINSCREEN DUO SLAB® can be amalgamated to slot into very tight spaces, leaving no empty gaps and achieving optimum thermal performance. It features a dual density insulation board that incorporates a robust outer surface and a resilient inner face. By compressing the primary fleece onto the top 50mm of the insulation, the product can be used, unprotected, in conditions of severe climatic exposure, including strong wind and rain, as experienced at high altitudes. In addition, the RAINSCREEN DUO SLAB® requires fewer fittings compared to other standard stone wool slabs, minimising installation time.

Cembrit Launches Windstopper Extreme in a Blaze of Glory

Cembrit, the leading roofing and cladding specialist, is pleased to announce the UK launch of Windstopper Extreme – a new sheathing board that is ideal for a range of uses on UK construction projects. To coincide with the launch, Cembrit tested the board to BS EN 1634-1:2015 / BS 476:22 at the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Cembrit is delighted to report Windstopper Extreme passed the test achieving a one hour fire rating.

A sheathing board such as Windstopper Extreme is typically installed behind decorative rainscreen cladding to effectively ‘seal’ the internal environment of a building. It is an excellent alternative to cement particle board and has, following the successful fire test, proven fire resistance. Building Regulations and other documentation require building structural elements to provide minimum periods of fire resistance, usually expressed in minutes, which are generally based on the occupancy and size of the building. BS EN 1634-1:2015 / BS 476:22 determines the fire resistance of non-loadbearing elements, such as sheathing boards, of a building construction when subjected to certain heating and pressure conditions. When subjected to a 60 minute fire test, Windstopper Extreme passed with flying colours.

Cembrit Windstopper Extreme acts as a windproof membrane for exterior walls that can absorb and release moisture without affecting the durability, strength or performance of the board. This very low vapour transmission resistance, enables moisture generated inside a building to pass through to the outside. Insulation can be placed directly against the inner side of the board which is also resistant toward both rot and fungal growth. The Scandinavian heritage of Windstopper Extreme also ensures it can withstand considerable fluctuations in weather and climatic conditions.

Cembrit fibre cement cladding achieves top marks in Liverpool

Cembrit’s through-coloured Cembonit cladding boards have been installed on a ten storey mixed use development in the heart of Merseyside, providing accommodation to students of Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University and the University of Liverpool.  

Paramount is a newly built development comprising top quality student accommodation, a spa and gym, as well as commercial space.  Built on a site that once featured a landmark cinema, the building has been developed to house a number of the 50,000 students flocking to Liverpool each year. The accommodation, which incorporates 440 units over 10 floors, is located within short walking distance to all three university campuses, and backs onto the Empire Theatre and Lime Street station.

North West Developer, PHD1 Construction’s aim was to regenerate the 3500sq m2plot to meet the needs of the community.  Due to its central location, the appearance of the external envelope was extremely important, and one which led to the specification of a cladding solution that could achieve a varied finish. Bak Cladding Solutions was the sub-contractor on this project and sourced the Cembrit Cembonit cladding in Flint through Vivalda in Manchester.

Alan Trueman, Contract Director at Bak Cladding Solutions comments: “I have worked with Cembrit on a number of occasions, so I was confident that the Cembonit cladding boards would deliver outstanding results. The installation was slightly challenging, due to the panels being installed at 70 degrees to the building to provide a unique looking appearance. Ease of installation is a key feature of Cembonit cladding boards, and one which helped us achieved the desired end result.”

Cembonit is an autoclaved, through coloured board in 11 pastel coloured impact resistant boards characterised by an attractive matt finish and a faint directional grain. During the production process, Cembonit undergoes a unique impregnation treatment, which effectively protects against water staining and dirt, ensuring that the façade retains its attractive appearance in both dry and wet weather conditions.

The combination of colour stability, with a class 0 fibre rating to BS 476 part 6 and a class 1 rating to BS 476 part 7, makes Cembonit ideal for overcladding rainscreen applications. Randomly dispersed spherules of cement in Cembonit’s surface and variations of shade from sheet to sheet will assist in creating a natural looking façade. The sheets can be used for a range of applications, such as: rainscreen cladding, weatherboarding, window elements, fascia, balconies and prefabricated facade elements.
